Howdy, folks! Sorry I’ve been MIA. Don’t worry, I’m still eating well. It’s just that I’ve been too busy to edit photos and post them up!

On a weekday a fortnight ago, knowing I had to be out running errands all day, I wanted to travel light. The last thing I needed was a bulky DSLR. But a hunch made me slip the compact digicam into my bag.

True enough, I discovered a new foodie gem just when I wasn’t expecting to. After picking up a book order in Killiney Road, I was walking back towards Orchard Road when I detected the aroma of freshly fried epok-epok. Mmm…! Time for afternoon tea break!

Curry puff (S$1.20) and teh tarik (S$0.90)

Looks good, yeah?

Egg curry puff, cross-sectioned

Mmm…the curry puff here was indeed worth checking out! Maybe the turnover is high; my puff was still hot and crispy. I like how the thin pastry is melt-in-the-mouth but not overly buttery. The curried potatoes are cooked in a fragrant, moist chilli rempah, not curry powder paste. This is just what a classic Malay epok epok is supposed to be. I like!

Egg curry puff (left basket) & sardine puff (right basket)

There’s two choices of curry puff: egg or sardine. More accurately, the former is curried potato with a quartered hard-boiled egg. If you’re wondering why I only bought egg, that’s cos I don’t eat canned sardine.

This Malay coffee shop also sells one-dish meals like mee rebus, lontong, mee siam, mee soto, and nasi lemak. There are other light snacks like goreng pisang and kueh kueh. The guys at the neighboring table were eating their mee rebus with gusto, and I was soooo tempted to order a plate myself! But I really couldn’t manage any more food. Never mind, the next time I’m here, it’ll be to try the mee rebus and tar pow (takeaway) some curry puffs!
