One of the more popular food stalls in Alexandra Village hawker centre, Old Punggol Satay has managed to maintain a consistent standard over the years.
My usual order here is pork (must order!) and chicken satay. They also serve mutton, but I’m not a fan of this meat.
What gets my vote for Old Punggol Satay is:
- The marinade for the meats is wonderfully fragrant with the perfect equilibrium of sweet-savoury flavors.
- The meat on each skewer is just the right size and amount — not too thick nor too thin.
- Very good grilling skill — the meat is slightly charred outside, but remains juicy and tender within.
True to tradition, each stick of pork satay has a piece of juicy fat between two pieces of meat — oh so sinful but oh so delicious! And I like how they use traditional ketupat (rice cake in palm leaf pouch) instead of compressed rice cake in a cylinder.
The peanut dip, with grated pineapple, is also authentically Hainanese. However, I find the peanut gravy to be a bit lacking — it needs more punch. The pineapple is quite watery; feels kinda diluted. Thankfully, these flaws are quite minor and do not diminish much of the overall enjoyment.
On the whole, Old Punggol Satay serves up an impressive satay — definitely one of my top picks for Chinese satay.
There is a minimum order of 10 sticks, if I remember correctly. Average waiting time is about 15 to 20 minutes.
