This is another one of my trusty, go-to stalls in Bukit Merah Central Food Centre. It’s just next to Day Night Fried Kway Teow. Regulars at this hawker centre would be familiar with this stall.
During lunch hour, a 20 min wait is the norm. So just what’s the appeal about this stall?
I think the draw of Nan Heng’s chicken rice is their rustic and healthy style. The chicken is served skinless and boneless. The flesh isn’t super smooth, but neither is it dry. It’s served with a splash of sesame oil and soy sauce.
Puffy and airy, the rice doesn’t feel greasy. I like how it’s infused with a strong scent of pandan and ginger.
Another good thing about Nan Heng’s rice is that it doesn’t leave you feeling thirsty, a sign that they probably don’t add (or add very minimal) artificial MSG.
A basic plate of chicken rice starts from S$2.50. Many customers like to order add-on bok choy 油菜 for an additional S$0.50. They are very generous with the veggies.
To be honest, this isn’t one of my top 5 favorite chicken rice stalls, reason being their chicken rice tastes too healthy for my liking!
But whenever I have a craving for a lighter chicken rice, I’ll eat here and ask for “skin-on, bone-on” chicken. The boss will obligingly give me the chicken wing! By the way, the couple running this stall are very friendly. 🙂
