After lunch at Real Food, we went over next door to the newly opened Artisan Boulangerie Co. for dessert and coffee.
Headed by award-winning baker Eran Mayer who sold his successful bakery business in Paris to relocate to Singapore with his family, Artisan Boulangerie Co. (ABC for short) is the latest addition to our growing scene of authentic French-style artisan boulangeries.
The display counter and shelves are filled with a mouthwatering array of artisanal breads and pastries. Photo bomb ahead, feast your eyes!
There was a basket of Sweet Challah — a Jewish bread — at the counter for sampling. It was so delicious I bought a loaf home! Challah is a rich sweet bread, enriched with eggs and fat. The texture is quite similar to brioche, except it is made with oil instead of butter.
They have both plain challah and sweet challah. We had our sweet challah loaf for breakfast the next day. The bread texture is a little dense and cake-like. It’s generously studded with dried fruit and nuts like cranberry, sultana, walnut, and hazelnut.
My friend and I were both impressed with the plain looking lemon tart. The crust is crisp and doesn’t disintegrate easily, but tastes pleasantly light and buttery. The smooth lemon curd manages to be tart without making you wince, and is balanced out with just the right amount of sweetness. I’m not usually a fan of lemon tarts, but this one, I really enjoyed.
The chocolate eclair — excellent choux pastry paired with decadent chocolate cream — is also a winner.
Despite the numerous artisan croissants (think Tiong Bahru Bakery, Maison Kaiser, Paul’s, just to name a few) that have popped up over the past two years, ABC’s version still manages to impress with its light-as-air interior and impossibly crispy crust.
The madeleine (background) makes a charming accompaniment to tea or coffee.
As for their coffees, ABC uses Toby’s Estate beans. My flat white was smooth and milky, but I’d much prefer a stronger caffeine kick.
The place has a warm and inviting feel, thanks to the friendly people here who made us feel very welcome. I definitely see myself coming back; there’s so many other items I need to try! Next on my to-try list is their signature baguette, sweet ricotta croissant, and pear tart.
Prices are nett. Visitors who drive can park opposite at Orchard Grand Court car park.
