Been hearing lots of good things said about Plain Vanilla Bakery’s cupcakes. So when I was in Holland Village on an errand, I grabbed the chance to get some of these famous cuppies.
This little bakery is a bit hard to find. It occupies a little area on the second floor of a shophouse along Lorong Mambong. The easiest way to look for it is first locate El Patio Mexican Restaurant, opposite Harry’s Bar. Go up the staircase next to the restaurant, and you’ll see Plain Vanilla Bakery on the second floor landing. It’s so tiny it can barely fit 3 standing customers!
They have 9 permanent cupcake flavors. Each cupcake is priced at S$3.50.
- Milk Chocolate Chip
- Milk Chocolate Banana
- Chocolate Hazelnut
- Cookies & Cream
- Dark Chocolate Ganache
- Cinnamon Brown Sugar
- Red Velvet
- Strawberry White Chocolate
Then there’s seasonal or limited edition flavors, like Salted Caramel or Chocolate Peanut Butter.
The majority of their flavors seem to be chocolate-based.
But they’ve got a good mix of non-chocolate flavors, like the Carrot which is like American carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.
The friendly staff told me the Red Velvet is one of their bestsellers.
Another hot favorite is Strawberry White Chocolate, which was already sold out when I came, boo hoo!
So I settled for these four flavors. Clockwise from top right: Red Velvet; Salted Caramel; Chocolate Hazelnut; and Cookies & Cream.
Went home and shared the cupcakes with hubby. Here’s our verdict.
What we liked:
- The cakes look dense, but the crumbs are very fine and moist.
- Each flavor has a different cake base. Many other cupcake bakeries just use the same vanilla or chocolate cake base, and differentiate the flavors with a different frosting.
- The centre of the Chocolate Hazelnut cake is filled with Nutella; what a lovely surprise!
- The cake for the Cookies & Cream is embedded with Oreo cookie bits.
What we didn’t like:
- The Red Velvet’s frosting is too sweet. Would have preferred more tang in the cream cheese frosting.
- Overall, the cupcakes are rather rich and a bit too sweet for our tastebuds.
Out of these 4 flavors, our favorite is Cookies & Cream. Texturally, it’s interesting. Also, it’s not as sweet as the others. I guess hubby and I just don’t have a sweet tooth.
But I must say that Plain Vanilla Bakery’s cupcakes are a cut above the rest. Compared to other brands I’ve tried, Plain Vanilla Bakery’s cupcakes have this artisanal quality.
Although simple, their non-biodegradable packaging is visually appealing and very sturdy. They don’t provide plastic bags, so bring your own if you need to bag your cupcake boxes.
I can’t recall exactly, but I think the cupcake boxes come in inserts of two, four, six, and twelve. If you return your used 6-cupcake or 12-cupcake box, they’ll give you a free cupcake!
