Winter Weekend Afternoon Tea Buffet @ Chihuly Lounge, Ritz Carlton Singapore

A week before Christmas, hubby and I were invited to the Winter Weekend Afternoon Tea Buffet at Ritz Carlton Hotel.

I’ve tried the weekday day afternoon high tea at Chihuly Lounge, but not the weekend version. Instead of traditional 3-tier afternoon tea, the weekend high tea at Chihuly Lounge is buffet-style. Also, they update the menu quarterly, according to the seasons.

The canapes or appetizers are plated in dainty little glass dishes.

For sandwiches, there are 4 kinds available.

For the Winter 2012 weekend afternoon tea, the sweet pastries are created based on the theme “caramel”. There are at least 13 unique variations, created by Executive Pastry Chef Terence Pang.

Caramelized Chocolate Mousse with Parfait

Because it was the Christmas season, the pastries were given a festive makeover!

Nougat Mousse with Cherry

Chocolate Fudge Cake

…as well as dainty little cakes. This chocolate fudge cake is one of my fav items. Not only is it pretty, it tastes very yummy too!

Caramel Mille Feuille

The caramel mille feuille is very sweet, good for those who have a sweet tooth!

Sesame Nougat with Yuzu

Black sesame + yuzu — a Jap-inspired creation that’s sophisticated and pleasing to the tastebuds.

Caramel Macaroon

I’m not a fan of macarons, but couldn’t resist cos these are so pretty.

Homemade cookies

The crumbly and melt-in-the-mouth butter cookies have a lovely, homemade feel. Goes especially well with hot chocolate or coffee.

Chocolate pralines

Free-flow chocolate pralines! There’s milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and white chocolate.


A close-up on the canapes. They might not look impressive, but are surprisingly appetizing and more-ish.

The sandwiches are decent, though not as flavoursome or exquisite compared to those I had on my first visit.

There’s another station that serves warm scones along with clotted cream, jams, and chocolate sauce.

Iced Nougat Parfait

Also available is iced nougat parfait, which tastes like lightly whipped, airy iced cream. There’s fresh fruit, chocolate pearls, almond flakes, and chocolate sauce available for garnish.

Overall, the food selection is smaller than we’d expected for a buffet spread. The focus seems to be more on the pastries and chocolates section, which is certainly a feast for both the eyes and the palate.

I’m not a big fan of caramel because it’s usually very sweet and rich, but the caramel-based desserts for the Winter Afternoon Tea are surprisingly not too sweet nor cloyingly rich. Kudos to the chef for being able to balance the level of sweetness without compromising on flavor.

Hot chocolate and tea

Compared to other hotel afternoon teas I’ve tried this year, Ritz Carlton wins hands down when it comes to range of beverages. Other venues normally restrict beverages to at most 2 choices. But here, choices are unlimited, meaning you can order as many different teas and coffees as you like!

For tea, choose from over thirty blends of loose leaf teas from the Ronnefeldt tea collection. There’s also a variety of flavored iced teas, hot and iced coffee, chocolate, and espresso-based drinks.

The Ritz Carlton’s signature attention to little details is shown here, such as using frozen coffee cubes for iced coffee and frozen tea cubes for iced tea, so that your drinks won’t be diluted with melted ice.

The iced coffee was really good! We also enjoyed the hot chocolate and iced passionfruit tea.

The food range is somewhat limited, but made up for by exquisite pastries, extensive choice of quality teas and coffees, and genuinely warm and attentive staff. With deep, comfy sofas and natural sunlight streaming in from the lofty glass ceiling, the elegant and spacious Chihuly Lounge remains one of my favorite high tea venues.

      Yes, come visit Singapore! Lots of exciting new places to visit. There’s also Gardens By The Bay and also the River Safari which houses a pair of pandas from China!

    I’m actually choosing an ideal place for a small birthday celebration with my boyfriend, just the two of us.. I’m hesitating which of the following places best to go.. If I were to ask you to rate between High Tea at Ritz Carlton, Grand Hyatt and Goodwood Park, which one would you rate for the best? I need some advice.

      It’s hard for me to say which one is the best, because preference is such a personal choice. 🙂 I’d say it all depends on what you’re looking for.

      If my priority is a venue that’s elegant and romantic, I’d go for Ritz Carlton. If I’m in the mood for a hearty English-style high tea (ie. sandwiches, scones, Guinness beef stew), I’d choose Goodwood Park. Grand Hyatt has a pleasant contemporary deco. Some of the food items are a bit of a hit-and-miss, but you get a variety of local and international cuisines.
