Been wanting to check out Blackball — a grass jelly dessert chain from Taiwan — ever since they opened in Singapore this year. But their outlets are out of the way for me. Finally had the chance to try them out when I went for NeNe Chicken’s official opening at Star Vista.

Blackball Signature, cold. S$4.50

This is their specialty item — the Blackball Signature, an ensemble of black grass jelly, chewy sweet potato and taro balls, red bean, and black pearls (same as those in bubble tea). You can choose to have it hot, warm, cold, or icy.

Milky creamer

These chewy taro and sweet potato balls are a specialty of Jiu Fen 九份, a town in north Taiwan. In the bowl, there are two shapes for the taro and sweet potato balls. They taste similar but the cube-shaped ones seem more chewy than the longish-shaped ones.

I have no idea how they compare to the real deal in Jiu Fen, but I liked their texture. There’s also a discernible taste of taro and sweet potato.

The grass jelly was lovely too. Compared to our local version, it feels softer and more silky, with a melt-in-the-mouth texture.

Together with mushy red bean, chewy black tapioca pearls, and milky creamer (optional), this was a pleasant dessert full of interesting textures and flavors.

If you prefer to customize your own, you can choose to mix and match with other toppings like ice jelly and nata d coco. They also serve other desserts and iced beverages, eg. winter melon tea, grass jelly fresh milk, passion fruit tea, milk tea, and Blackball crushed ice.

Currently, Blackball have two outlets — Clementi Vibe and Star Vista. A third outlet in Bedok is scheduled to open soon. Check out their website and FaceBook page for updates.
