NeNe Chicken — one of the most popular lifestyle eateries in Korea — spreads its wings and lands in Singapore, opening its first international outlet in the new Star Vista mall.
“Ne! Ne!” means “yes, yes!” in Korean. Founded in 1999 and with over 1,000 outlets in South Korea, NeNe Chicken is fondly known as the “sauce-coated chicken specialist”. Their fried chicken comes coated in a variety of sauces, each with its own distinctive flavor.
I was at their official opening, and here’s what the invited guests got to sample.
The Swicy — a sweet sauce made with ketchup, garlic, onion, soy sauce, and a hint of chilli. Available in whole chicken pieces with bone-in.
For chilli junkies, challenge yourself with the Freaking Hot sauce — a fiery concoction of hot chilli peppers, a hint of ketchup, onion, garlic, and sugar. Available in whole chicken pieces, or wings and drumlets.
NeNe Green Onion — boneless chicken tenders coated in a sweet-savoury sauce made with soy sauce, mustard, and sugar. It is served with a topping of freshly shredded green onions.
NeNe Snowing Cheese — boneless chicken tenders generously sprinkled with powdered cheese.
Out of the 4 flavors we tried, my favorites are Swicy and Snowing Cheese.
For Swicy, the chicken is juicy and tender, while the batter remains crispy even though it’s coated with sauce. The sauce has just the right balance of sweet and spicy flavors.
The Snowing Cheese is another winning creation. Fine and feathery light, the sweet-salty powdered cheese coating is surprisingly addictive!
For those who can take the heat, you might like the Freaking Hot sauce. I’m a chilli wimp, so I only managed to finish half my Freaking Hot wing before waving the white flag.
There are 3 side dishes to choose from. Surprisingly, the Korean-style pickled radish complements the fried chicken very well. Tart, sweet, and crunchy, it helps to cut the grease and tame the heat of the spicy sauces. The sweet corn salad will most likely be a favorite among the young ones.
And here’s a special creation for kids — the NeNe POP! From their press release:
“This nifty creation consists of a cup filled with icy-cold soda and a special container that fits neatly on top to hold mini hash balls and NeNe popcorn chicken. A straw fits in a small slot so you can enjoy the refreshing drink while eating your snack.”
This is what the NeNePOP contraption looks like, disassembled. It’s a really neat idea, very convenient for eating on the go!
There’s only about 17 seats in this small eatery, as NeNe Chicken’s main focus is on take-away and delivery services. Delivery service will be launched in the last week of November in selected areas.
