Next to Chinese New Year, the other most important festival in the lunar calendar has got to be Mid-Autumn Festival 中秋节. This year, Mid-Autumn Festival aka Mooncake Festival falls on Sunday, 30 September 2012 (15th day of 8th lunar month).
The reason why I’m always excited about Mid-Autumn Festival is the array of wonderful mooncakes available yearly. Every year, hotels and restaurants try to outdo each other by coming up with creative, new flavors.
At a recent media preview at Mandarin Court, we were introduced to 2 new snowskin flavors — Raspberry and Cheese with Citrus.
Eating the Raspberry Mooncake is like enjoying a tangy, fruity dessert of airy raspberry mousse. The latter reminds me of cream cheese, with a touch of citrus to balance out the creaminess of the cheese.
The other two snowskin flavors are ever popular favorites — refreshing Green Tea with Melon Seed and boozy Lychee Martini.
Lychee Martini has always been one of my favorite liqueur snowskin flavors, and I must say that Mandarin Court’s version delivers a truly bold kick!
Among the baked mooncakes selection, my favorite has to be the Macadamia Low Sugar White Lotus Paste mooncake. The combo of macadamia nuts and not-too-sweet paste makes this a very more-ish mooncake. Family and friends who sampled this also had high praises for it.
With thin skin, smooth paste, and creamy yolk, the classic Double Yolk with White Lotus Paste is another winner.
Mandarin Court’s Mooncake Selection 2012 is now available for sale at Mandarin Court Chinese Restaurant, Level 35 (12pm to 10pm) and at the Deli Counter, hotel lobby (11am to 9pm) till 30 September 2012.
