美食鉴定团又出发咯! For this week’s segment, the YES 93.3FM foodie team’s destination was Kushi for a taste of exquisite Japanese cuisine!
Kushi, which means “skewer” in Japanese, is a cosy little Japanese restaurant that specializes in kushiyaki, or grilled skewers. They are popular for their ala carte buffet (S$60++ each for lunch, S$68++ each for dinner). Besides kushiyaki, there’s also sashimi, appetizers, sushi, and deep-fried items on the menu.
Sorry about the grainy photos. I had to ramp up the ISO, cos the lighting in the restaurant is extremely dim. Great for dining ambience, but hell for photography. My apologies for not doing justice to the subjects (both food and human).
This was HungryCow‘s favorite item of the night. Using premium Kurobuta (black pig), the pork cheek was intensely flavorful, succulent, and full of bite! A light sprinkle of salt was all that was needed to enhance its natural flavors.
While I enjoyed the pork cheek, I couldn’t help feeling some guilt as it was rather fatty. No such issue with the hamachi! With silky smooth and juicy flesh beneath crisp skin, the yellowtail cheek was grilled to perfection.
The buffet price seems rather pricey, but then, you get to have unlimited wagyu beef!
The grilled items were mostly excellent, including this giant squid that’s nicely tender.
I usually shy away from fresh oysters, but the oysters here were so big and fresh I couldn’t resist trying one. It was really sweet, and had no fishy taste. I think oyster lovers will go crazy here!
This cold dish was surprisingly refreshing.
The tempura batter was very light and non-greasy. Yummy!
The maki rice was a little soggy. Maybe a little too generous with mayo? Otherwise, the flavors were well-balanced.
We also had a large platter of sashimi, with premium items like toro aka tuna belly (limited to 4 slices each diner) and amaebi (sweet shrimp). A pity I don’t eat sashimi, so no comments on that.
A very special guest joined us for dinner — DJ Peifen. She looked radiant as always!
And of course, there were six very happy contest winners who formed the rest of the tasting panel.
If you wanna participate in the next 美食鉴定团 foodie session, do tune in to YES 93.3FM on Wednesday, 5 May 2010 from 6pm onwards. Participate in the radio contest, and you could join 933FM DJs Weibin and Jiafa for the next food-tasting. Next week’s destination is the Singapore Night Safari!
