Ricky aka Hubby/the Neanderthal (heh, private joke!) works in Tanjong Pagar, so naturally, he has his regular favorite lunchtime haunts in the area. One of them is 合记 Braised Duck at Tanjong Pagar Food Centre. He’s been raving so much about it that I thought I should try it myself and see if it’s really so good!
The stall only displays its Chinese name, so “He Ji” is the romanized translation. Besides braised duck, there’s the usual braised side items like braised hard-boiled egg, taukwa (firm tofu), and liver. You can choose rice, noodle, or porridge for your carbs.
For the duck rice set (S$3.00), you get rice with boneless duck, a couple pieces of taukwa, and half an egg. Duck liver is an additional S$0.60. Amount given is pretty decent.
Well, I must say the braised duck is quite yummy. Tender, juicy meat, with no hint of gaminess. The liver was perfectly cooked — not overcooked, and still creamy.
The only thing I didn’t enjoy is the flavored rice, but this is totally personal. I simply like my rice plain. 🙂 Well, this isn’t the most authentic Teochew braised duck I’ve had, but it’ll do when the craving for duck rice hits.
